The Equipment Operator is directly responsible to the Highway Foreman. The primary responsibility of the position is the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment: backhoes, loaders, graders and trucks. In addition, it is the responsibility of the Equipment Operator, when no equipment is being operated, to assist other Highway Division staff in performing boots-on-the-ground operations, such as construction and maintenance of public roadways and sidewalks, storm water infrastructure, ditching, tree cutting and chipping, leaf pile maintenance, buildings, grounds, parks, playgrounds, comfort stations, cemeteries, and the plowing and removal of snow.
This position regularly interacts with the public, and strong communication skills both with the public and the Highway Foreman are a must. The position requires demonstrated ability to implement tasks with limited instruction, limited oversight, with efficiency and to complete tasks within the time allotted. Demonstrated abilities to problem solve and to work well under pressure are also a must.
The minimum qualifications for this position include: High School graduate, a valid State of Maine Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire; experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment, and familiarity with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety regulations that are associated with the construction industry. Applicants must have a clean driving record and satisfactorily complete a background check, physical examination and drug testing.
