Housing Authority

The Bar Harbor Housing Authority Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. There are exceptions, and Commissioners will be informed of date changes or cancellations by Duane Bartlett (Executive Director, Mount Desert Island & Ellsworth Housing Authorities) or Theresa Hodgdon (Board Liaison).

There are seven seats on the Board. Five Community Members at Large, and two Tenant Commissioners. Community Members at Large serve a five-year term, and a Tenant Commissioner’s term is for four years, unless either are filling out the term of another.  HUD (The Department of Housing & Urban Development) imposes no term limits. Community Members at Large are vetted and appointed by the Town Council. Tenant Commissioners are chosen from among the residential communities within which they reside, but they are also appointed by the Town Council

Commissioners are expected to attend meetings regularly, and to familiarize themselves with Board packet materials, the agency’s mission, programs and policies, and where applicable, federal and state laws and regulations relating to Public Housing. www.hud.gov is a good resource, as is Title 24 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

For information, applications and housing, please call 288-4770 ext 127 during business hours Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, or visit www.emdiha.org.
